HMS Conway, a naval training school was often referred to as a “school ship”, established in 1859 and based for most of its existence on a 19th century wooden ship of the line. Initially anchored on the Mersey near Liverpool, it was relocated to the Menai Strait during World War II. In 1953 while being towed back to Birkenhead for a refit, the ship ran aground, was wrecked and subsequently burned. The school then moved to specially constructed facilities on Anglesey where it operated for another twenty years.
