SS Guglielmo Marconi is an Italian ocean liner launched on September 24, 1961 for Lloyd Triestino’s Genoa – Sydney route, has a sister ship named SS Galileo Galilei, its maiden voyage commenced from Genoa on November 18, 1963. In 1976, SS Guglielmo Marconi was reassigned to the Naples – Brazil – River Plate route under the Italian Line.
By 1979 it was incorporated into Italia Crociere’s fleet as a dedicated cruise ship but faced limited success, leading to its sale to Costa Lines in 1983. Following a two – year refurbishment the vessel was reintroduced in 1985 as Costa Riviera under Costa Cruises. Costa Riviera operated alternating Caribbean and Alaska cruises during its tenure with Costa Cruises.
In 1993, Costa and Bruce Nierenburg formed American Family Cruises, targeting young American families with children. However, the venture proved unsuccessful, prompting the ship’s return to Genoa in September 1994. It resumed service under the name Costa Riviera, concluding its operational years with journeys throughout Europe.
