Historical information Elbe Commercial Ship Model :
The Elbe, built at the Govan Shipyard of John Elder & Company Ltd., Glasgow, in 1881 for Norddeutscher Lloyd of Bremen was a celebrated ocean liner for transatlantic voyages. Unfortunately, it’s tragic end came on the night of January 30, 1895 when it collided with the steamship Crathie in the North Sea, resulting in the loss of 334 lives. Powered by a 3-cylinder compound engine driving a single-screw propeller. The Elbe was notable for its speed, capable of reaching 15 knots. However, it’s limited cargo capacity and high coal consumption made it economically unsustainable. The ship was distinguished by a straight bow, two funnels, and four masts, marking its status as the first vessel of the Rivers Class, a series of eleven express steamers named after famous German rivers, launched on April 2, 1881.
