Royal Louis, the fourth of six first rate ships built for the French Royal Navy. This distinguished three deck vessel was designed to showcase the grandeur and strength of the French monarchy on the sea. Despite its prestigious purpose, the ship which served from 1762 to 1772, did not engage in any military operations and spent much of its service in port. It was also one of the rare three deck ships constructed during Louis XV’s reign. The Royal Louis was constructed by engineer Jacques Luc Coulomb.
