Founded in 1892 by William H. Hill and Elihu Edwards, the Peterborough Canoe Company operated its wooden canoe manufacturing facility at the intersection of King and Water streets in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. James Z. Rogers oversaw the company’s management.
Peterborough Canoe Company’s canoes were distributed internationally, reaching markets as distant as Europe. In 1915, the company expanded by acquiring its competitor, the William English Canoe Company. By 1923, it merged with Chestnut Canoes, a manufacturer from New Brunswick, forming Canadian Watercraft Limited. In 1928, the company further grew by acquiring the Canadian Canoe Company, also based in Peterborough.
In 1948, Princess Elizabeth received a 16 – foot cedar – strip canoe crafted by this company as a wedding gift from the city of Peterborough.
