The Venetian gondola has been present in Venice since the 11th century, initially referenced by name in 1094, it is believed that during the 17th and 18th centuries, there were between 8.000 to 10.000 gondolas in operation. However, today only about 400 are still actively used.
The gondola is a traditional rowing boat in Venice, featuring a flat bottom that suits the conditions of the Venetian lagoon. It resembles a canoe but is longer and narrower. The oarlock, which isn’t tightly affixed to the hull serves both for rowing and steering.
Throughout centuries, the gondola served as Venice’s primary mode of transport and was a common sight on its waterways. In modern times, these boats continue to serve in public transportation, notably as traghetti (ferries) on the Grand Canal and in special regattas organized for gondoliers. Presently, their primary function is to transport tourists at a fixed rate.
Historically, there were several thousand gondolas in the 18th century. Today, several hundred remain, mostly rented out to tourists, with a few privately owned and in use.
