Historical information RMS Empress of Ireland Cruise Ship Model:
The RMS Empress of Ireland was a British-built ocean liner, tragically sank near the Saint Lawrence River in Canada following a collision in dense fog with the Norwegian coal ship Storstad during the early hours of May 29, 1914.
Commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company the Empress of Ireland was the second of two ocean liners built in the early stages of the company’s North Atlantic operations. In 1903, Canadian Pacific entered the transatlantic passenger transportation market between the United Kingdom and Canada.
This route quickly became pivotal in North Atlantic commercial trade. In its inaugural year the three ships completed 33 westbound crossings, transporting a total of 23.400 passengers in third class cabins predominantly immigrants bound for Canada.
Safety features aboard the RMS Empress of Ireland included ten watertight compartments that divided the ship’s hull, creating eleven compartments in total, sealed by 24 watertight doors. All eleven compartments extended from the double bottom up to just below the Shelter Deck, spanning three decks above the waterline.
